Nearly half a million UNISON members work in health care in the NHS and for organisations providing NHS services in all four countries of the UK.

We recognise and defend the rights of all workers in the health service. By working together within UNISON, health care workers are better able to fight for change.

UNISON’s health service group for health and care workers has been set up to best represent the employment needs of our members working in the health sector.

UNISON’s health service group welcomes members employed or contracted by the NHS in all four UK countries. Our members are from all non-medical occupational groups including:

  • nurses and health care assistants;
  • midwives;
  • health visitors;
  • administrative, finance and HR staff;
  • ambulance staff including paramedics, technicians, control room and maintenance staff, therapy and healthcare science staff;
  • estates and housekeeping staff;
  • technicians and maintenance staff;
  • commissioning staff;
  • allied health professionals;
  • scientific staff;
  • healthcare managers.

Service groups give UNISON the knowledge of issues specific to the sector. In turn, service group members have access to union benefits that are tailored to their job.

So if you experience problems your UNISON representatives (reps) will be able to help, in part because they know about your occupation’s workplace issues from first-hand experience.

UNISON’s health care service group has four occupational groups which take forward projects, policy work and negotiations around workforce issues specific to the following groups:

  • nursing;
  • ambulance;
  • science, therapies and technical;
  • operational services.

When it comes to professional development, service groups allow us to better tailor our courses to workers in specific sectors so UNISON members can continue improving their skills.

Issues and achievements

Our health service group campaigns to protect the future of the NHS as a publicly funded, free service; influences policy-makers; and negotiates to improve conditions for the health care workforce. UNISON plays an active role in the negotiating and bargaining structures in all four UK countries, including in the new receiver organisations in England established through the Health and Social Care Act. This means the service group is well placed to represent the interests of healthcare staff at all levels.

Service group structure

Members are elected through a biennial ballot to UNISON’s health service group executive, which helps decide priorities and activities. The health service group conference takes place annually to make decisions on policy relating to UNISON members in the health care sector.

UNISON is one of the UK’s largest trade unions, serving more than 1.3 million members. We represent full-time and part-time staff who provide public services, although they may be employed in both the public and private sectors.

We represent members, negotiate and bargain on their behalf, campaign for better working conditions and pay and for public services.
